ABOUT
CARLOS DAVID STUDIO
Hi there — I’m Carlos David.
Portrait Photographer, interviewer, and dad of two.
I split my time between New York and Slovenia, creating portraits and stories that help people show up with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
Here’s a bit of how I got here:
The writer
I studied theater and literature, danced through college, and posed for painters to make ends meet — learning as much in rehearsal rooms and cafés as in classrooms. After graduation, I retreated to the mountains of Tepoztlán, where I ghostwrote erotic vampire novels in solitude. Eventually, craving connection and creative friction, I moved to New York City.

NEW YORK CITY
Photography found me in the dark corners of nightclubs, documenting chaos in fast, surreal flashes. I moved into fashion and advertising, but found myself more interested in the people than the clothes — in who they were becoming and what lingered in their expressions.
That’s when I started asking questions. Some stories need more than a photo. Some moments ask for a frame — and a voice.
Finding my voice
Over time, I built a practice rooted in portraiture and interviews — images in conversation with the people they capture. My work has been shown in galleries across New York, England, Croatia, Slovenia, and Mexico, with projects like Personae and BE exploring identity and self-representation.
I’ve photographed public figures and everyday people with extraordinary stories, recorded voices for museums, and followed artists into their studios with a camera and a lot of curiosity.
These days, I split my time between New York, Slovenia, and Mexico, spend summers by the sea with my daughters, and drink far too much coffee.

Finding other people's voices
That same curiosity — the urge to ask questions and really listen — led me to start Being in New York. It began as a short documentary about queer and trans artists, and is now evolving into a podcast about the people who shape this city through art, resilience, and reinvention.
I make portraits that are more than pictures — they’re invitations to be seen, to take up space, and to tell your story. Whether you’re an artist, entrepreneur, or in transition, brand portraits can capture who you are and who you’re becoming. Together, we’ll create images that feel true to you and resonate with the people you want to reach.
